Fortnite Creative

October 2019 – April 2020

While working at Stray Kite Studios, I collaborated on the design of eight Fortnite Creative islands (mini-games) with Fortnite Creative 1.0. Six of these islands were featured by Epic in Fortnite. Below are some highlights from islands I worked on.

I led the design of Battle Room, a Fortnite Creative island / mini-game where two teams fight to the death in a low-gravity box, inspired by Ender’s Game. I came up with the concept, whiteboxed the level, prototyped the mechanics, and updated Battle Room based on feedback. Other members of the team helped polish the game and it was ultimately published under Stray Kite’s account.

I did level design and implemented mechanics for Stray Kite’s islands License to Eliminate, Nature Calls, Conquest, and Wifi Wars. I became very skilled at placing Fortnite props and architecture pieces to build out levels for specific experiences. In Conquest, an 8v8 team battle for controlling points, I built five different POIs to encourage different types of combat, from wide-open brawls to more strategic zones with cover, as well as secret tunnels between locations. Since Conquest has a sprawling map, I built portals across the map to allow players to instantly warp from one POI to another, as well as strategically placed vehicle spawners.

For Nature Calls, I worked on mechanics, implementing the escaped player countdown and escape to “Toilet Heaven” using Creative 1.0’s in-game gadgets, among other mechanics. I helped polish Llama Master by placing weapon spawners, updating the score-keeping and Llama Master-tracking behavior, and updating which weapons were available to play with. On Wifi Wars I generally worked on everything, from showing and hiding the new satellite objectives, building out the attacker base, to decorating the level with crashed planes. I also worked on tutorials for all islands.
